“Access Denied” to Documents and Settings folder in Vista

I was trying to retrieve data from a crashed vista hard disk, especially pst files and user’s Documents folder. I was not able to access the documents and settings folder. I got an access denied message. But I had the admin rights on my pc.

You cannot access folders like "Local Settings", "My Documents" and "Application Data" because in Vista they are actually located elsewhere. The dim icons with the shortcut links you see are actually referred to as "Junctions". These junctions are used by Vista for compatibility but really just redirect programs to the proper location in Vista. If you make a look at the properties of these junctions you cannot see the securitry tab, and the folder is empty. The actual folder locations are.....
